Mastering

Mastering is often seen as some sort of "black art", having no knowledge of the occult we can assure you it is not. Rather than magic, we opted to harness the power of science to develop and build our remarkably accurate listening environment, key to a great mastering studio. This along with trained ears and passion for what we do, we think you'll understand why lab coats are more appropriate attire than capes if you see us at work.

We understand that each project that comes through our doors is unique, in turn our approach is to customize and tailor our process to the specific needs of the project at hand. We keep the integrity of the mixes intact while providing clients with a polished final product that both protects and complements the work of the team who created it. We use a mix of quality analog and precision digital equipment to provide the best possible product to your listeners, on CD, vinyl, or any form of digital distribution.

The Studio

A room full of fun analog goodies is only as good as the decisions you make with it. The monitoring and room treatment are the the core of any mastering studio. Ensuring that you can trust what you hear, and make decisions about how best to proceed. We rely on a ATC SCM 100ASL monitors (a lot of letters and a very funny way to spell "the best") and a room full of acoustic treatment to give us the perfect lens to work through.

Speaking of decisions, we've got a host of tasty analog knobs to twiddle as well as some of those new fangled plugy-iny things, to have all the flavours of processing at our fingertips to decide what suits the material best while being able to retain an objective ear for the project. The internet says people like bullet points, so here they are (but we can't help ourselves so everything is a link to more info on a separate page)

About Brock

Brock.jpg

CPS Mastering's owner and engineer is Brock McFarlane.

He began his career in audio studying physics at the University of Alberta, this led to the audio engineering program at the Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver, where he received his honours diploma.

Brock went on to work as an engineer at the infamous Hipposonic and Mushroom Studios working on countless records, before opening CPS mastering in 2008.

He loves big tubes and tiny transistors, and could probably talk to you about transformers for an entire day (or longer if you would listen). And loves trying to find the scientific answer to mastering’s greatest question “What can I do to bring the listener closer to the music?”

About Elisa

Elisa Pangsaeng is a Canadian audio engineer. She cut her teeth making records in Vancouver, recording, writing, producing, and mixing, while working out of several of the cities busiest studios.

Elisa likes squishy cats, compression, tape, tubes and shoes. You might catch her listening to pop music at upwards of 100 decibels, especially on ATCs. Tom Waits, Karen O, Frank Black, and Beyoncé are her familiars.

Brock and Elisa first worked together at Hipposonic in 2010, she currently produces music out of Monarch Studios, and joined CPS in 2018.
