Mastering

Mastering is often seen as some sort of "black art", having no knowledge of the occult we can assure you it is not. Rather than magic, we opted to harness the power of science to develop and build our remarkably accurate listening environment, key to a great mastering studio. This along with trained ears and passion for what we do, we think you'll understand why lab coats are more appropriate attire than capes if you see us at work.

We understand that each project that comes through our doors is unique, in turn our approach is to customize and tailor our process to the specific needs of the project at hand. We keep the integrity of the mixes intact while providing clients with a polished final product that both protects and complements the work of the team who created it. We use a mix of quality analog and precision digital equipment to provide the best possible product to your listeners, on CD, vinyl, or any form of digital distribution.

The Studio

Our studio, often referred to as 'The Spaceship', has been extensively treated, creating a pristine listening environment and featuring an impeccable monitoring system. You can't fix something if you can't hear it, and our beautiful ATC SCM-100ASL monitors give us all the insight we need to make informed decisions.

The full potential of the tracks we work with is reached by using a thoughtful mix of both analog and digital gear. The highlights of our analog chain are the Knif Etip passive tube mastering equalizer and a Knif Vari-Mu II tube mastering compressor, both serial "numero uno" and hand built by the designer Jonte Knif.  Other notable equipment on deck is the Crane Song STC-8, Millennia NSEQ-FF, Weiss DS1-MK3, Junger D-01.  To take superior care of the conversion, we call on the dCS 954 (DAC) and 902 (ADC) and a Lynx Hilo.

About Brock

Brock.jpg

CPS Mastering's owner and engineer is Brock McFarlane.

He began his career in audio studying physics at the University of Alberta, this led to the audio engineering program at the Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver, where he received his honours diploma.

Brock went on to work as an engineer at the infamous Hipposonic and Mushroom Studios working on countless records, before opening CPS mastering in 2008.

He loves big tubes and tiny transistors, and could probably talk to you about transformers for an entire day (or longer if you would listen). And loves trying to find the scientific answer to mastering’s greatest question “What can I do to bring the listener closer to the music?”

About Elisa

Elisa Pangsaeng is a Canadian audio engineer. She cut her teeth making records in Vancouver, recording, writing, producing, and mixing, while working out of several of the cities busiest studios.

Elisa likes squishy cats, compression, tape, tubes and shoes. You might catch her listening to pop music at upwards of 100 decibels, especially on ATCs. Tom Waits, Karen O, Frank Black, and Beyoncé are her familiars.

Brock and Elisa first worked together at Hipposonic in 2010, she currently engineers out of Monarch Studios, is an instructor at Nimbus School of Recording, and joined CPS in 2018.
